Lowther Hotel, Goole, wins award

Work to preserve historic murals at The Lowther Hotel in Goole has led to property developers The Julie Howard Partnership being short-listed for a high profile award.

York-based husband-and-wife team Julie and Howard Duckworth have been short-listed in the Built Heritage category of East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s annual Chairman’s Awards. The nomination was made in recognition of their commitment to saving and restoring rare murals in a suite of rooms on the first floor of the hotel, which are thought to have been created some time between 1826 and 1830 to illustrate what the docks, which were being built at that time, would look like when complete.

The murals were carefully cleaned and restored by a team of experts from Lincolnshire-based Hirst Conservation as part of a major project that will see the once derelict building transformed back to its former glory. It will be brought back into use later this summer as a restaurant, and wedding, meeting and conference venue. Julie and Howard eventually hope to complete the renovation of rooms of the first and second floors so that they are able to provide overnight accommodation.

A delighted Julie said: “This was a huge surprise to us and we’re absolutely delighted that our work has been recognised with a nomination for such a prestigious award.

“We’ve only just got over our excitement about hearing that English Heritage has re-designated the Lowther Hotel as a Grade II* listed building to reflect its historical significance, so this award nomination is really the icing on the cake.”

Julie and Howard have been invited to attend an awards ceremony at Bridlington Spa next Tuesday 11 May, when the winners of East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s annual Chairman’s Awards will be announced.
